Congressman Jim McDermott has been named a knight by the African nation of Lesotho. The knighthood was bestowed recently (August 22nd) by King Letsie III at the Royal Palace in Maseru, Lesotho, a landlocked country surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. The liberal Democrat from Seattle was recognized for his leadership on the African Growth and Opportunity Act, which has enabled Lesotho to become a top African exporter of apparel to the United States. McDermott co-sponsored the 2000 law, which his office said has helped create 50,000 jobs in Lesotho. Former President Bill Clinton was similarly honored by Lesotho.
